Ever since discovering Breaking Bad, I have become more of an avid TV watcher trying to find other great shows to come close to my amazing experience with that show. I’ll be honest, nothing will probably dethrone Breaking Bad as my favorite but there are many shows that are amazing in their own right. Here are five shows, some new and some ongoing, that are must tries this spring if you haven’t already.
Returning March 9th is Bates Motel, the spine-chilling drama on A&E. Anyone familiar with the classic horror film “Psycho” knows the names Norman and Norma Bates. Bates Motel is essentially a prequel to “Psycho,” giving us a look into the world of Norman Bates and his peculiar relationship with his mother. Going on its 3rd season, Bates Motel is dark and unsettling to watch at times but that is what makes it so great.
Not to mention the acting! Vera Farmiga who plays as Norma is brilliant; one of my favorite female actresses. Freddie Highmore is also great and really fits the part of Norman. The first 2 seasons did a great job on giving us an inside look into Norma and Norman’s past as well as introducing all the characters that were part of their lives. We were eased into just how creepy and dark Norman can be and season 3 is looking to dive us head first into how far the Bates’ rabbit hole goes. Bates Motel is definitely a must watch!
Empire is close to ending its first season but it’s never too late to catch up if you haven’t seen it! Empire is the hit new series on Fox that has people talking and it’s well deserved. I’ve been a fan of Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson ever since their roles on “Hustle & Flow.” The chemistry between them alone is enough to watch this show. I imagine you will be along with me on the “Team Cookie” train as Henson is fantastic at her character, Cookie. The rest of the family all have their own stories and it is great to see them interact and not to mention, the music they produce is pretty catchy as well.
Empire may not be the most complex of this bunch but it’s fun, sexy, and iconic. If you are the least bit interested in hip-hop, the music industry, and great characters, Empire is definitely a show you should check out.
ABC is on fire right now. With The Bachelor just wrapping up one if its most successful seasons and its other hit shows such as Once Upon A Time still going strong, ABC has now introduced a new show called American Crime.
A murder takes place, connecting the stories of people of different backgrounds. The topic of race is what drives this drama to easily invest peoples emotions while watching. Not only is American Crime interesting and thought provoking but the Oscar winning writer from “12 Years a Slave” is on board writing for this show. The season premiere last week was a hit and I can see this show doing very well in the future.
Better Call Saul
So, you had to imagine this one coming in my list! Better Call Saul is a spin off of Breaking Bad and actually holds up its own! I was a little worried for the series premiere because when I think “spin off,” I get nervous that it isn’t going to live up to the original however I kept faith in Vince Gilligan putting together another masterpiece and so far, Better Call Saul is living up to the hype.
This show is a prequel to Breaking Bad where it follows Jimmy (before he became Saul) as he tries to make money as a struggling lawyer. He gets into a bit of trouble, that leads him to being his journey into becoming the lawyer he was destined to be. Bob Odenkirk is a great actor and was much loved on Breaking Bad so the transition to his own show has gone over well with fans. Trust me when I say that this show is worth a shot, especially if you loved Breaking Bad.
Game of Thrones
You don’t need me to tell you this but I will anyway! Game of Thrones is amazing. Even if you have not read the books, Game of Thrones is a definite must watch for its characters and their stories that intermingle with each other. The scale of this show is massive, with the show being filmed in many countries to capture the essence of the 7 kingdoms.
When I first started this show during Season 1, I had not yet read the books and didn’t until season 3 so reading the books isn’t mandatory but it definitely adds to my anticipation on seeing what happens next. Not only can you watch the show, but you can also play the TellTale series of this show which adds even more flavor to your experience. Season 5 of Game of Thrones begins April 12th.
What do you think of these five shows to watch this spring? Are there any more you would like to add to the list? Let us know!
