10 Pokemon That Could Work in Pokken Tournament

0 946

Sitting in the popular streamer Shofu’s stream the other day, they were talking about Pokemon that they would like to see in the game. Here is my list.

Keep in mind that while I know and grew up with Pokemon, I don’t claim to be much of a serious fan. Most of my picks are based off of my knowledge of Pokemon as well as the hidden potential that these Pokemon could have if put into a fighting game.

Currently the Pokken roster is as follows.

Charizard, Pikachu, Pikachu Libre, Machamp, Gengar, Mewtwo, Shadow Mewtwo, Suicune, Sceptile, Blaziken, Gardevoir, Garchomp, Lucario, Weavile, Chandelure, and Braixen

I went through all of the generations, albeit a bit quickly, and may have found some neat fighters to add to Pokken Tournament. There is definitely a good mix of ‘oh, that makes sense’ and ‘why would you pick that?’. I also tried to look through all the generations for Pokemon I thought would work best in a fighting game. Here we go!

poliwrathPoliwrath

Literally copy Little Mac’s move-set from Smash and you have an insta-fighter. Seriously, throw in a water-gun move here and there and you have the perfect water type Pokemon character. He’s basically a good, evened-out close range fighter with limited ranged abilities. Just, give me an uppercut, a nice juicy uppercut and we have a deal.

xatu

Xatu

Stick with me here. A Psychic Flying Pokemon. Xatu’s wings also extend so you could get some kind of gust attacks or spinning energy attacks. I feel like Xatu would most likely work like Chandelure in the sense that it would primarily be ranged. It might be a little difficult to create a move-set around this Pokemon, but c’mon, how many people would be surprised to see this in a fighting game.

Delibird

Delibird

Think about it. That sack could do a lot of damage. Swinging that around on the battlefield could have all kinds of uses. Putting the enemy in the bag, dealing damage and then throwing them out again. A headbutt rush attack perhaps? I thought Delibird would be another interesting Pokemon to add to the list because I feel like it doesn’t get enough exposure.

Mawile

Mawile

All the bite attacks. Mawile also has a Mega-Pokemon evolution like some of the Pokemon in the game already so I think this would be a great pick. I feel like many people already know Mawile in passing from the free Pokemon 3DS games like Pokemon Shuffle. However, it would also bring another Dark type Pokemon into the game, for better or for worse.

Absol

Absol

Another Dark Pokemon, but really a lot of Dark type Pokemon are so cool! Absol could also have roughly the same animations as Suicune with a bunch of Dark type attacks. Maybe some bites and some scratch attacks. A headbutt move and a cool darkness stun would all I need to play this Pokemon.

Buizel

Buizel

Another much-needed Water type Pokemon! Slipping and sliding would be the name of the game for Buizel. It would make it a little unpredictable and a fairly fast Pokemon. Again, like with Poliwrath you could have a water-gun attack and various ranged abilities based on water torrents.

Deoxys

Deoxys

Deoxys is a pretty cool Pokemon, granted it is a legendary and might be a little overpowered, but nonetheless, I think it would be an awesome addition. Deoxys has four forms, normal (shown), defense, attack, and speed. All of these could be utilized for quick changes during Deoxys’ moves and attacks. It could possibly be one of the harder Pokemon to master, but a satisfying addition.

Throh

Throh

Either Throh or Sawk could work. Since there are quite a few first generation Pokemon lined up already I was hesitant to put Hitmonlee or Hitmonchan on this list. However, I think that all those Pokemon would be great additions though they might be a little repetitive. As his name suggests, Throh would be a pro at countering and reactionary movements as well as having the best throws in the game.

Honedge

Honedge

This is a little bit of an odd pick, even looking through what I have on the list already. In theory the evolutions of this Pokemon, Doublade and Aegislash, would be better suited to Pokken but I would really like to see what the creators do with this first evolution Pokemon. Of course it would be built around fast slashes and maybe a block with the ‘scarf’, but keep in mind that it is a ghost/steel Pokemon and there could be some cool things you could do with that. Maybe a ground slam knock up into some quick aerials with a ghost power? It’s fun to think about once you get going!

Floette

Floette

Because who doesn’t want a cute Floette messing everyone up? This Pokemon could also have multiple colours since Floette changes colour with the seasons in the Pokemon games. Getting whacked around by a Fairy type Pokemon with a flower, don’t tell me you don’t think that would be funny. Floette also gets a lot of grass type attacks, and a character with Vine Whip is just what we need! Solar Beam anyone?

While the game seems simple at a first glance it is actually quite in-depth and there are many moves that every character has. As many other fighting games do, it forces a sense of constant changing strategy to match up against not only the character but the player as well, as with most other fighting games out there.  As far as I can tell, Pokken is well-balanced and seems simple enough for even a newcomer like me to try and play it sometime.

Which Pokemon would you like to see in Pokken Tournament? Do you think the game will be popular enough to warrant some DLC?
