A Message To All The Gears of War Newcomers

With Gears of War: Ultimate Edition coming to the Xbox One next week, I thought it would be nice to share some of my knowledge to all the newcomers buying Gears of War: UE and taking on the series for the first time. Some may call these warnings, some may call them tips, but I like to think of this as just a heads up! Gears of War multiplayer is no joke and if you are looking to take some names in it, don’t expect results immediately. Here are some tidbits I’d like to share with you before you take the plunge and immerse yourself into the world that is Gears of War.

1. You are not going to be very good at first.

It’s going to take time for you to get good at Gears of War and you are going to die a lot. That’s not necessarily a bad thing as I strongly believe you have to lose to win. Gears of War isn’t just any game you can pick up and be instantly good at. You have to practice and play a lot to improve and dying a lot in any Gears of War multiplayer ultimately teaches you how to get better. There are plenty of moments that will have you asking yourself, “how did they do that?!” You will learn from these Gears of War vets and in time, mimic moves you once saw them use on you. So don’t get discouraged if you aren’t so great at first. I started playing Gears of War multiplayer on Gears of War 2 and got destroyed at first. Then after a couple of weeks, I was holding my own and helping my teams win. In a couple of months, Gears of War was completely natural and I became really competitive because I had improved drastically. So hang in there!

2. Your gaming vocabulary is about to change.

Words like “gib,” “two-piece,” “wall bounce,” and “sponge” are about to become a part of your gaming vocabulary.  Let me let you in on what they mean so you go in prepared. “Gib” is short for giblets, meaning you just shot someone or got shot into a bunch of little pieces.  “Two-piece” is using a melee attack and then shooting them while they are stunned. Chances are you will really hate this move and think it’s cheap when it is first done to you. The trick is to try and avoid it all together or simply just do it back. Don’t be afraid to adapt.

“Wall bouncing” is when you bounce by using the A button, attaching and detaching from walls and other forms of cover. Walls aren’t necessarily needed to wall bounce but that’s where the term comes from. This move can be used to avoid an opponents shots while dealing out your own. “Sponge” is if you or someone else takes shots with little damage, that is referred to as a “sponge.” This happened a lot in the previous Gears of War games due to lag or characters like the Savage Kantus having smaller hit boxes, thus needing more shots to be brought down. Think of these “sponging” players as just better practice for your shots. Land them and you’ll succeed….eventually.

3. Gnasher Shotgun is love, Gnasher Shotgun is life.

After a few games, you may start to realize that the gnasher shotgun is the most popular gun used in Gears of War: Ultimate Edition. The game isn’t even out yet and I can say that with absolute certainty. In a nutshell, the gnasher shotgun IS Gears of War so you better get used to using it. This is the go to weapon for many Gears of War players as it gives them the ability to get up close and personal with their opponents. Sure, there are lancers and power weapons but when all else fails, the gnasher should be your best friend. Expect chaos with nothing but gnasher shots as you try and capture hills in game modes such as Annex and Blitz which is essentially a fast paced King of The Hill. The gnasher shotgun will be your key to victory so master it as much as you can.

4. I hope you like extra salt.

Of all the gaming communities I have experienced and been apart of, the Gears of War community has the most sore losers. It sometimes gets personal.  I have plenty of examples where someone chewed my teammates and I out in game lobbies just because we won. I remember this one particular time where I was chatting with my team about something, and a guy from the other team turned on his mic to say “Shut up B****!” and it was all because we had just beat them in the previous game. People get really mad over playing Gears of War so be prepared for smack talk and name calling.

5. Admire and appreciate.

Gears of War isn’t just any series to most of its fans and you are about to embark on how it all began, with Gears of War: Ultimate Edition. Gears of War is a franchise that has captured the hearts of many people because of it’s story, characters, and multiplayer. For many of us, Gears of War is the reason we purchased an Xbox 360 and/or Xbox One. Some of us own collectors editions, books, comics, and figurines of this series and never need more than one reason to purchase anything Gears of War related. “It’s Gears. That’s all I need to know.” Our faces light up when Gears of War is brought up in conversation. We love this franchise and hope you will too. Good luck out there rookies!
