Retro and Next Level Working on Secret Projects

According to recent news, Retro Games and Next Level, Nintendo’s most notable western studios, are working on secret projects. Due to these realizations, much speculation is in the air. Speaking from a personal level, I’m not getting my hopes up, but I’m definitely curious. Recently, Nintendo has had a knack for sticking to what they know, yet, they also have their standout moments when they do something phenomenal. E3 2010 and the announcement of Kid Icarus: Uprising taught me that.

The Consensus for Retro

Retro earned their claim to fame for the outstanding work they’ve done rebooting the Metroid series. Before Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, I felt that no Metroid could surpass the greatness that was Super Metroid on the SNES. Perhaps the controls of Metroid Prime 3 is what finally took me in and cemented my love for Metroid in first person. Gamers are insisting that it is very likely that Retro’s next game will be another Metroid. There have been many clues from Reggie’s Metroid pin at the VGX Awards, Samus’ ship in Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, and other mentions or references from those at Nintendo. In my opinion, Retro is Nintendo’s most talented studio and they are more than just a “Metroid machine”. As an avid fan of the series, I would love a new one, but I also want something unexpected from Retro. I think it’s time for Nintendo to loosen the reigns and give them a bit more creative freedom. For the last several weeks, Retro Games has been hiring a TON of new hands. Let’s hope it’s for good reason.

The Consensus for Next Level

Next Level is not Nintendo-owned, but they work very closely with the company. They are most known for the Mario Strikers games, the Punchout!! (Wii) reboot, and most recently, highly rated Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon for 3DS. GoNintendo reports that lead designer, Devon Blanchet, is working on a “top-secret game”. Because we have no further details, I don’t want to jump to conclusions that it’s for Wii U. This project has supposedly been in development since October 2012. Next Level has proven that they are very capable and I would like for them to expand. Retro Games is heralded as the “Naughty Dog of Nintendo,” but if Nintendo were smart, they’d utitlize their smaller wester developers more efficiently to get the products most western fans are clamoring for. Personally, I believe that Next Level could do very well with a dormant franchise like StarTropics. A Punchout!! in that hard comic style from Little Mac’s reveal would also be welcome.

What do you guys think about this news about Retro and Next Level? Do you think that all of the evidence points to a new Metroid from Retro? What about Next Level?
