VGX Awards This Saturday: Are You Hype?

With the VGX video game awards this weekend, suspense and speculations are swirling throughout the gaming community.

Microsoft has already come out the gate mentioning that they will show new Titanfall footage, as well as Quantum Break, a game many of us are still curious about. Also at VGX, there will be new footage for South Park: The Stick of Truth, Broken Age, Dying Light, Tom Clancy’s The Division, and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. To the delight of Square Enix fans, there will be two new trailers! Many predict that one of them will be Tomb Raider related. How exciting!

Nintendo is choosing to be the most secretive, with Reggie Fils-Aime teasing his appearance and a “big announcement” coming to VGX. Many Nintendo fans are speculating it could be a brand new IP, a more likely announcement of a new Super Smash Brothers character, or could it be…the long awaited…..Zelda U? I am hoping for the latter but also trying to keep my expectations in check. Nintendo has their way of pulling out the right cards at the least expected times.

Regardless of what the announcement is, Fils-Aime has owned up to the Wii U having a “quiet” year in 2013, and says Nintendo is “not going to be making that same mistake in 2014,” so it is an exciting time for Nintendo and VGX could be exactly what they need to jump start the Wii U’s redemption!

Let’s not forget the awards! We have big hitters going up for Game of The Year this year with: Bioshock Infinite, Grand Theft Auto V, Super Mario 3D World, The Last of Us, and Tomb Raider! My pick is The Last of Us, what is yours? Check out the rest of the nominees at

Be sure and tune in to the VGX video game awards on Spike, or watch it streamed online on, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS3,,, Hulu, and Twitch December 7th starting at 6pm EST / 3pm PST.

Erica has been fond of gaming since she was 5 years old. Growing up in the 80s and 90s, she was privileged to have experienced the NES, SNES, TurboGrafx 16, Sega Saturn, Dreamcast, N64, amongst many other consoles. Do not mistake her classic upbringing for unawareness of today’s generation of gaming. She is up to date with gaming news, the gaming community, as well as the social aspects of gaming. She is fascinated with men and women and how they each view and treat gaming, and above all she keeps gaming in check for what it is meant to be: for fun. • I’m not gonna lie. All of this hype is trying to suck me in. I want to see what Nintendo is doing and I’m waiting to see if there will be any new gen trailers. I hope to goodness we see some The Order: 1886 and Sunset: Overdrive footage.

  • So much hype….that I’ll be sucked into most likely…I really shouldn’t…gotta get on my essays >_>

  • I can’t wait to see this year’s train wreck of a show. Its already so predictable who is going to win.

  • I’ll have to agree with Quaisha on this one. I should probably just take the VGX awards as what they are, but invariably the awards go to the most marketed or biggest financial success and its mostly just a huge marketing event. Extra Credits did a good episode on this stuff ( Maybe they’ve changed, but I’m still not buying any new releases unless they’re simultaneously recommended by at least 3 friends and Yahtzee.

  • LMAO! @Quaisha and @Bob Johnson. I think people are more excited for new trailers and announcements that the actual awards lol.

  • Even though I’m not usually interested in what Spike shows (not even TNA and I like wrestling lol), I did like their countdown shows they did for PS4 and XB1. As long as they will devote enough time to showing off gameplay of upcoming games and some trailers, then I will tune in. If they try to do stupid stuff like skits and stuff like that, I’ll just tune out. As far as what do I think the game of the year should be? Well there’s A LOT of great choices this year. My pick would honestly have to go with Bioshock Infinite. It had a great story, a challenging 1999 mode if you wanted to challenge yourself. It explained a lot of stuff that was going on in the Bioshock universe. Not to mention that ending………..If anyone here has played the game, you will know what I’m talking about. That ending was just tremendous and it was one of the few times that I honestly thought about the ending after a game was over. Not to mention, with the recent Burial at Sea DLC that just came out a few weeks ago, I can’t see any other choice being picked IMO. GTA had way too many online problems for me to consider it sadly. I haven’t finished Last of Us or played the multiplayer so I can’t pick that. Mario 3D world looks fun, but the lack of online co-op and the white tanooki suit makes me shake my head. Tomb Raider had a great single player, but lacked replay value and the multiplayer was completely tacked on, it was basically a poor mans Uncharted when it came to multiplayer.

As far as what Nintendo has in store, I hope it’s good, new Zelda game or not. At this point, to me, I need to see action and words. The old saying is ‘actions speak louder than words.’ I need to see some action at this point, but I have faith in them going forward. As long as that new Zelda game comes out, they got my attention.
