3 Ways To Help You Be Better Organized At Home

When it comes to your home, it’s easy for things to get disorganized if you don’t have processes in place to help yourself and your family keep on top of things. But while a little disorganization is usually fine, if the level of your organization falls so far that you’re missing things like important legal documents in the mail or bills that aren’t being paid on time, it might be time to rethink how you keep things organized.

To help you get things back on track, here are three things you can try to be more organized at home.

Take Control Of What Comes Into Your House

Because everyone needs to start somewhere, Margarita Tartakovsky, a contributor to PsychCentral, shares that one of the best ways to begin organizing your home is to take control of what new items come into your home.

By giving everything that comes through the doors of your home a place to go, you’ll be able to ensure that you’re not adding more clutter on top of the clutter that you already have. And if something comes into your home that you can’t find a place for or don’t need, make sure that you remove that item from your home as soon as possible. By doing this, you’ll then be able to focus your attention on what you do have rather than new items you keep acquiring.

Fit Organization Into Your Life

There are many schools of thought when it comes to organization. And while some of them might sound great to you on paper, what you really need is an organization style that will fit into your life.

To help you find this, Dawn Nadeau, a contributor to Good Housekeeping, recommends that you think about where in your home important organizational moments take place. This might include where you normally enter your home, where you normally exit your home, where you get ready for the day or for bed, and more. By finding ways to better organize these areas, you’ll find that the overall principles of organization will come easier to you.

Be Careful With Flat Surfaces

One of the hardest areas for most people to keep organized are the flat surfaces of their homes. It’s so easy for clutter and other items to accumulate on these spaces.

To combat this, Julie Morgenstern, a contributor to HGTV, recommends that you take extra care when organizing on and around your flat surfaces. Rather than just piling things on top of other stacks, try to find ways to keep things simple and pared down so you don’t have too many items to accumulate on these surfaces in the first place.

If your home is currently in a state of unorganized chaos, consider using the tips mentioned above to help you bring more organization to your space.
