FTC reported investigating Amazon’s MGM purchase
The purchase of Amazon MGM may take longer than planned. Information sources said the Federal Trade Commission launched an “profound” investigation of the purchase of Amazon MGM for the potential of antimonopolic abuse. Officials are concerned about the potential for acquisitions to “improve” the influence of Amazon in offering goods and services, not just the content it produces.
MGM has refused to comment. We have asked Amazon’s comments.
Probes will not be completely unexpected. FTC and the Ministry of Justice agreed to reviews about the agreement when large technology critics who often Lina Khan were crowned as FTC seats. Amazon hopes for the crackdown, and goes as far as asking the determination of Khan Khan in future cases. He was not expected to bow from the MGM investigation.
This will not always produce FTC blocking agreements. This might impose conditions on purchases, and can easily delay the final deal several months. It took more than a year for Google to complete Fitbit acquirer – Amazon might have to wait for the same amount of time to have MGM, and it was provided there were no big obstacles.
