Things You Should Know Before Watching Messiah on Netflix

Messiah sparked a controversy over the internet as soon as its trailer was released. People really had mixed feelings about the show; some felt that maybe it contains blasphemous content about Islam or Christianity, while others had an open mind about it and took it as a creative topic to make a show on.

WHAT IS MESSIAH ABOUT ANYWAY?

The story starts when a Pastor, named Felix, witnesses something that is not less than a miracle. A tornado flattens every other building in the area except the church he pastors because supposedly a man stood between the tornado and the church, protecting it from damage.

After apparently saving the church, the Middle Eastern man becomes the Messiah for everyone. A CIA agent, Eva Geller is now investigating this so-called Messiah because he thinks that Messiah doesn’t have any powers and in fact is a fraud.

His fans follow him religiously as he displays his powers. However,  some people have adopted a neutral stance and are open to the idea that he is just a con-artist. The story shows 4-5 different points of view: CIA officer, an Israeli officer, a Palestinian refugee, a preacher from Texas and his daughter, and a journalist.

IT IS CONTROVERSIAL

You need to know that this is a controversial series and may or may not hurt your personal and/or religious believes. Throughout the show, you will see him perform many miracles that are not humanly possible. Moreover, the Messiah is shown to be raised in a Muslim family and quotes both the Bible and Quran, at many places throughout the series.

IT SPARKS YOUR CURIOSITY

Despite being controversial, this Netflix series is binge-watch worthy. You can watch all 10 episodes in two days because once you start watching it, you’ll definitely get hooked and there is no turning back.

Each episode will leave you unsettled and you would want to watch another to find out answers. Messiah is not a religious character. He may look like Jesus, but he is not portrayed to be since he displays some contrasting personality characteristics

To what this show, you need to be more open-minded and accepting. You will only get hooked if you don’t let your personal believes and sentiments come in the way.

IT IS NOT BASED ON TRUE STORY

Netflix usually does not go about throwing disclaimers before starting a show, but for Messiah, it sort of knows that the show will spark controversy and hence it gave a little disclaimer at the start of the show that it is NOT based on a true story. It is just a fictional story that has been scripted in a really creative way, which may make viewers believe that it is based on factual information provided in religions, especially in Islam and Christianity. However, that’s not true; it is just for fun and does not have anything based on true events.

IT IS NOT FAMILY FRIENDLY

Messiah is not the kind of show you can watch with the whole family around; it is something you would want to watch with peace and quiet. Moreover, the show has some coarse language and there are scenes that show male-nudity and sexual content. Some violent scenes may also fall under the PG category. Plus, the controversial nature of the show does not make it a suitable watch for everyone may watch unless they have a broad mind. Some people in your family might get triggered and this will ruin the fun for you too.

SHOULD YOU WATCH IT?

Honestly, it is really a matter of personal choice when it comes down to shows like Messiah. If you look for reviews, you will find extremely mixed ones. Some people say that it depicts a certain ideology in Islam such as the occurring of ‘Dajjal,’ which is messianic, but a negative figure.

Some people feel that it is blasphemous, while other people praised the show for its binge-worthy nature. Even the creator of the show, Michael Petroni says that the show is provocative, but it isn’t offensive.
